The Los Angeles Chargers continue rolling heads. Run game coordinator/defensive line coach Jay Rodgers has been fired. This comes just hours after the Chargers fired head coach Brandon Staley and General Manager Tom Telesco. Outside linebackers coach Giff Smith will serve as the team’s interim head coach.
Chargers Fire Jay Rodgers
Rodgers worked with Staley at the Chicago Bears in 2017 and 2019 under defensive coordinators Vic Fangio and Chuck Pagano. He was hired by Staley in 2021 to be the Chargers run game coordinator and outside linebackers coach. He moved to the defensive line last season. Rodgers was also on the Broncos coaching staff from 2009 to 2014 working under a revolving door of head coaches and defensive coordinators, including John Fox, Mike Nolan, Wink Martindale, Dennis Allen, and Jack Del Rio.
The Chargers ground game is ranked 31st by EPA/play and Success Rate and 25th by DVOA. They averaged just 95.7 yards per game, the seventh worst in the league. The Chargers defensive line has generated the NFL’s second-most sacks this season, but in rushing defense, the Chargers are ranked 25th by EPA/play and 22nd by DVOA.
