*Update: A horrific season for the Los Angeles Chargers just went from bad to worse. Their franchise QB is now officially done for the year after he was put on season-ending IR on Tuesday with a fractured finger.
The Chargers season is all but mathematically over, so this was the right decision. Herbert is a warrior, and if they were still in viable playoff contention, knowing his track record, you have to think he would some how find a way to play through this. But right now, the only thought must be his long-term future.
Head Coach Brandon Staley spoke on the injury yesterday:
There’s a lot of information that we’re gathering right now. He’s as tough as they come. But we’re going to make sure that, whatever it is, we’re going to do what’s best for Justin long term.
The Chargers will now turn to Easton Stick to finish out the 2024 season. He did display a small spark in the second half when he hit Quentin Johnston for a 50+ yard reception. We will see if any of that will carry over to the next game.
Midway through the 2nd quarter Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert left the game and went to the locker room with another finger injury. Earlier this season Herbert suffered a fractured finger on his left hand. This time it’s on his throwing hand.
The injury happened when the Denver Broncos defense logged their 4th sack of the game.
The Chargers Without Justin Herbert?
Since Week 2 of the 2020 season, Justin Herbert has been the Chargers starting quarterback, not missing much more than a few snaps here or there.
Easton Stick entered the game and played in one series before the half. He went 1 for 3 for three yards. Stick had played 2 snaps in his career previously.
This is a must-win game for the Chargers to keep their playoff hopes alive. According to the New York Times, the Chargers playoff chances drop from 9 percent to 3 percent. If they are able to pull off the win their chances jump to 13 percent.
