The NFL Trade deadline is around 24 hours away, and the latest reports are that the Los Angeles Chargers are window-shopping trade targets right now. While demands for adding a wide receiver have waned, there are still plenty of positions the Bolts need to upgrade to ensure they are competitive come playoff time.
With the recent firing of Dennis Allen and their most recent loss to the hapless Carolina Panthers, the New Orleans Saints have become the most recent shop window needy teams are peering through while licking their chops.
Chargers Urged To Trade For Saints Center
The world’s most preeminent offensive line coach, Duke Manyweather, believes that the Chargers should be in the mix with the Saints for the 2023 Pro Bowl center, Erik McCoy.
The 6’4″, 303-pound has been the Saints starting center since they drafted him in the second-round pick in 2019. In that time, McCoy has established himself as one of the league’s best centers, particularly in the run game, a recent area of concern for the offense.
This season, McCoy has played just two games — missing time due to a groin surgery, that required surgical repair. He was given a 6-8-week recovery window, meaning he should be making his return within the next few weeks, barring setbacks.
They added Bradley Bozeman this offseason. Bozeman splashed onto the scene last week, for a retaliatory hit on Nathan Shepherd in defense of quarterback Justin Herbert. Despite that act, Bozeman has been the weakest link on the offensive line, earning the poorest Pro Football Focus grades for run blocking and pass blocking among the Chargers starting offensive linemen. He has allowed the 11th most quarterback pressure among NFL centers.
Manyweather has coached several of the league’s best offensive linemen including left tackle Rashawn Slater.
