Arguably, the Los Angeles Chargers’ biggest rivals, the Las Vegas Raiders, have officially hired former Bolts head coach Norv Turner to attempt to fix the NFL’s worst offense. This is no short order. The Raiders are dead last in offensive EPA, 25th in success rate, 30th in offensive DVOA, they’ve scored just 17.9 points per game and average 280 yards of offense per game.
This caused the team to fire their offensive coordinator, Luke Getsy after a 41-24 beating by the Cincinnati Bengals.
Former Chargers Coach Hired By Raiders
Scott, who was the Raiders’ pass game coordinator, was named interim offensive coordinator and Norv was brought on to be a senior offensive advisor. Norv is one of the most well-respected offensive minds and was the head coach for the then-San Diego Chargers from 2007 till 2012, during the golden age of modern bolts offense, in which they had Philip Rivers, LaDainian Tomlinson, Antonio Gates, and Vincent Jackson.
While respected, it has been some time since the 72-year-old has captained a top-10 offense by points or yards. In fact the last time his offense was that well ranked in both categories was with the Chargers in 2011. His best offense was the 2010 team. Both of those teams failed to make the playoffs.
Turner most recently served as offensive coordinator for the 2018 and 2019 Carolina Panthers. Those teams were ranked outside the top 10 in both points and yards.
In his time as Chargers head coach, he went 56-40 and won the division in his first three seasons. They finished second and missed the playoffs in his final three seasons.
Despite having a winning record with the Chargers, Norm Turner coached more NFL games than any other coach with an overall losing record. He previously coached the Redskins and Raiders, both of which had losing records during his tenure.
If Turner is able to improve the Raiders defense, it will be evident by the next time the Chargers play the Raiders in Week 18.
