Los Angeles Chargers Trade For 2x Pro Bowl Playmaker Based On Bold NFL Brass Predictions

If there is one thing that has been evident since the Los Angeles Chargers moved on from top wide receivers Keenan Allen and Mike Williams; their need to replace Allen and Williams. The team attempted to rebuild their wide receiver room through free agency and the draft but landed just one competent receiver, Ladd McConkey. That proved not to be enough in their playoff loss to the Houston Texans.

Jeremy Fowler of ESPN recently included an option for the Chargers; DK Metcalf, based on information gathered talking to NFL executives. Here is what he wrote;

“Metcalf is still in his prime at age 27 and is a challenge for opposing defensive coordinators. But Jaxon Smith-Njigba received more targets than Metcalf among Seattle receivers this season — 8.1 to 7.2 targets per game — and Metcalf, a projected 2026 free agent, likely needs a new contract, which won’t be cheap.

“The Seahawks can still get good value for him, and he could pair with Ladd McConkey for a good inside-out tandem,” an NFL coordinator said of a move to the Chargers. “[Justin] Herbert to Metcalf would be scary. I think [Los Angeles] will be looking to help the quarterback in a big way.””

Metcalf would be a good complement on the outside to McConkey, who primarily plays in the slot. Metcalf’s ability to stretch the field will fill the role for which Quentin Johnston was drafted in 2023.

The Chargers unsuccessfully tried to fill that role with a significant rotation of four players; Johnston, Josh Palmer, Simi Fehoko, and DJ Chark. All were unable to be consistent and competent threats as an outside deep threat. Metcalf has been both of those things over much of his six seasons.
