It is hard to get over how terrible the Los Angeles Chargers offense has looked under Easton Stick and Luis Perez, but even among that wreckage, there were some fantastic performances from across the roster. (Mostly on defense, but an offensive player made the list!)
Los Angeles Chargers Top 4 Performers
Goal Line Defense
For the second game in a row, the defense forced a turnover while their backs were against the wall. After handing the ball to the Rams on the Charhers 34 via a strip-sack they marched the ball into the red zone to the five. But the Chargers defense allowed no points on that drive after limiting the Rams to four yards on as many plays, culminating in an interception on fourth and goal on the one-yard line.
Over two games the Chargers have closed out 17 of 35 3rd down attempts and are perfect against three fourth down attempts. They are also 2 for 4 when opponents get into the red zone
Deane Leonard, DB
Deane Leonard was the Charger that intercepted that fourth down attempt on the goal line. But he also had an incredible day on the stat sheet. He was targeted more than any other player, seven times. He allowed just three completions for 46 yards, only two yards allowed after the catch. He also created three pass breakups and was credited with two STOPs.
The team needed to resolve their cornerback depth. Leonard joins Tarheeb Still as the front-runner at those spots.
Teair Tart, DL
Teair Tart was signed just two days before this game, but he made his presence felt. On just 17 total snaps he is credited with two tackles. One was a tackle for loss when Tart tackled Rams RB Zach Evans for a 2-yard loss on 2nd and 1.
After losing more than 2000 snaps from last season’s defensive linemen, the Chargers needed to add experience to the roster. Tart proved he offers that.
Simi Fehoko, WR
The great wide receiver search is in full effect for the Chargers. Simi Fehoko made a case for himself to keep his roster spot. Not only did he lead the team with 54 yards receiving, but he is the only receiver who can find room to create extra yardage. He leads the team by far with 28 yards after the catch. He also picked up two of the six passing first downs. He’s created two of the team’s four explosive passing plays
Maybe the most valuable trait he can offer the Harbaugh offense is his blocking ability. Through two games he has the best run-blocking grade of any skill position player.
Cameron Dicker, Kicker
Cameron Dicker has been perfect in the preseason, hitting all four of his attempts including a 55 and a 58-yarder. His three field goals represent the entirety of Chargers scoring on Saturday.
