Trading Allen Would Fix Cap Woes

As Breer also notes these discussions are primarily related to the team’s cap situation, as the Chargers are roughly $21.1 million over the cap per Over The Cap and will have to be under the cap before the new year league starts at 1 pm PST on Wednesday, March 14th. Allen’s current cap hit is $37.7 million and the team would save $23.1 million, putting them in the black with that move alone. Moving on from Williams would save them $20 million.

Allen was one of the few bright spots for the Chargers last season until his season was cut short by a heel injury. He totaled a career-high 108 receptions for 1,243 yards and seven touchdowns. Allen was on track to set a new career-high in receiving yards. and the fact he’s on an expiring contract, the veteran receiver could be acquired by a contender for a reasonable price.
