Former Closer Shows Interest In Signing Contract With Los Angeles Dodgers

It’s been just over two weeks since the Los Angeles Dodgers captured their latest World Series title, but the front office hasn’t been able to relax as MLB free agency gets underway. After all, now it’s time for Dodgers president Andrew Friedman to build the first team to become back-to-back World Series champions since the New York Yankees from 1999-2000.

While the baseball community awaits MLB free agency’s biggest domino to fall, it could be weeks before Juan Soto makes a decision. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t plenty of other free agents itching to sign a contract with the Dodgers.

The Los Angeles Dodgers have needs in their everyday lineup and in their bullpen. There are various ways the front office could address the Dodgers’ needs. Yet, sometimes, the free agents come to you. The Dodgers are already an attractive free-agent destination each year. But after winning the World Series, they’re even more intriguing.

Our latest proof comes from free agent reliever Paul Sewald, who recently explained how eager he would be to join the Dodgers, in any capacity. If he were to sign with a team that’s not ready to win a World Series, Sewald may be seeking a role as a closer. But with the Dodgers? He’d just be happy to land a spot in the bullpen.

“If it’s LA, they have lots of closers, lots of people getting chances in the ninth inning. If it’s Evan Phillips, if it’s Michael Kopech, if it’s me or part of the situation there, I’ll take that into consideration. The most important thing that I want is to go to a situation where I can be comfortable and I can pitch my best. If that’s in the eighth inning in LA, if it’s the ninth inning somewhere else, then that’s what I’m going to take.”

Sewald, a 34-year-old right-handed reliever, spent parts of the last two seasons with the Arizona Diamondbacks, where he compiled a 4.08 ERA. But his best stretch came with the Seattle Mariners from 2021-23, where he had a 2.88 ERA and 52 saves in 172 appearances.

He may not be the top arm in the Dodgers’ bullpen, but if Sewald can maintain consistency as a late-inning solution in high-leverage situations, he just might become one of their most reliable options in 2025.
