The Los Angeles Dodgers have addressed their outfield needs by signing Michael Conforto to a one-year contract. However, the team’s pursuit of re-signing Teoscar Hernández has stalled due to disagreements over contract terms, particularly regarding deferred compensation.
Dodgers Eyeing Santander and Suzuki to Replace Hernandez
This impasse has prompted the Dodgers to explore alternative options, including the potential acquisition of Anthony Santander or Seiya Suzuki, as reported by Jon Heyman of the New York Post.
“The Dodgers seek one more big bat, and most likely in the outfield since the plan is for Mookie Betts to return to his preferred shortstop. In addition to Hernandez, Anthony Santander and a trade for Seiya Suzuki are on the table.”
Suzuki offers an intriguing blend of offensive production and defensive versatility. He enjoyed a successful 2024 season, hitting .283/.366/.482 with 21 home runs and 73 RBIs.
While Suzuki possesses the offensive firepower the Dodgers seek, acquiring him would require overcoming several hurdles. He has three years of team control remaining and would need to waive his no-trade clause to facilitate a deal. Furthermore, recent reports suggest the Cubs have no immediate plans to trade him.
Santander enjoyed a breakout season with the Baltimore Orioles in 2024, hitting .235/.308/.506 with 25 doubles, two triples, a career-high 44 home runs, and 102 RBIs in 155 games. However, Santander’s defensive limitations and the qualifying offer extended to him by the Orioles present challenges for potential suitors, including the Dodgers.
According to the most recent reporting, Hernandez continues to entertain other offers, despite clarifying his desire to return to LA. The Toronto Blue Jays and Boston Red Sox have emerged as front runners, but the Seattle Mariners (A former employer of Hernandez) has also entered the discussion.
The Red Sox and Blue Jays have also been linked to Santander.
