The Los Angeles Lakers have officially assigned Bronny James to G League affiliate South Bay Lakers per ESPN. James is set to play in the team’s season debut against the Salt Lake City Stars at 8 PM on Saturday. The game will be broadcast on Tubi and Spectrum SportsNet.
James has appeared in four games for Los Angeles, albeit sparingly. After making history with his father in the season opener, James has earned minimal time.
Against Cleveland, a step-back jumper in the ending moments of the game gave James his first two NBA points. Now, the former USC Trojans guard will get to develop his play in the developmental league.
Bronny James Assigned To South Bay Lakers
Per Shams Charania, James will only play in South Bay games at home. Both respective NBA and G League teams plan on managing time between rosters. James will get time to develop his play as a professional in the G League, while also still getting glimpses of the NBA pace.
After being drafted 55th overall, James signed a four-year, $7.9 million contract with the Los Angeles Lakers. Time in South Bay could be beneficial to unlocking James’ potential. At the very least, the demotion will serve as an ease of transition into professional play for James.
South Bay Lakers head coach Zach Guthrie, described a “process-oriented” journey ahead for James.
James will join South Bay Saturday after being on the road with Los Angeles, who recently went an unpromising 1-4 run in five games. The Lakers will be playing tomorrow at home against the Philadelphia 76ers.
