Lakers Provide New Encouraging Injury Update, Relief For Anthony Davis Imminent

The Los Angeles Lakers have been grappling with significant injuries to their frontcourt this season, with Christian Wood and Jarred Vanderbilt yet to make their season debuts. Jaxson Hayes, who initially returned to action in late November but subsequently re-aggravated his ankle injury against the Phoenix Suns, has been sidelined for a considerable portion of the season, missing 20 of the Lakers’ last 21 games.

However, there is a glimmer of hope on the horizon. Hayes was already made available for the team’s game against the Sacramento Kings last Saturday after having recently progressed to five-on-five contact drills in practice and is expected to return to the lineup for the Lakers’ New Year’s Eve game against the Cleveland Cavaliers, according to ESPN’s Dave McMenamin.

Hayes’ return is a much-needed boost for the Lakers. Prior to his injury, he was a key contributor to the team’s success, providing valuable minutes as the primary backup center behind Anthony Davis. Hayes’ mobility and defensive versatility were crucial to the team’s defensive schemes. Offensively, he showcased an impressive ability to finish around the basket, averaging 6.4 points and 4.5 rebounds per game before his injury.

Hayes, a former eighth overall pick by the New Orleans Pelicans in the 2019 NBA Draft, signed a two-year contract in 2023. His return will significantly boost the team’s frontcourt depth and enhance their overall competitiveness as they strive to contend for a playoff spot.
