On Monday afternoon, the Miami Dolphins released the list of players who would be inactive against the Los Angeles Rams on Monday Night Football this evening.
While many eyes were trained on the game status of Tyreek Hill, another important offensive weapon was among the inactive; fullback Alec Ingold.
Alec Ingold Ruled Out Vs. Rams
Ingold is far from a household name and fullbacks in the league are generally incredibly rare. But he is among the league’s most important players at the position; he has taken 140 snaps this season and plays on almost 40 percent of the team’s offensive snaps, the 49ers are the only other team to use a full back more, and only slightly at that –143 for Kyle Juszczyk. The next inline is the Vikings CJ Hamm, who has 56 offensive snaps this season.
The Dolphins use two-back looks (21-personnel on a league-high 59 percent of plays and that often features Ingold as a lead blocker for the speedy back Devon Achane.
To make matters worse, they don’t have another fullback on the roster. In this case, they may turn toward a tight end or as the Los Angeles Chargers have done with Scott Matlock, look to a defensive lineman.
The Rams defense has struggled against the run this season. They are allowing 135 yards per game on the ground, the 8th worst in the league. Almost 42 percent of runs against them are considered successful, they are 20th by EPA per play against the run and are 22nd by DVOA.
Over the last four games, the Dolphins have averaged 170 yards on the ground behind one of the league’s best run-blocking offensive lines and Alec Ingold.
