Enrique Hernández is one of the most beloved Los Angeles Dodgers players. He is outspoken, fun, and plays with a tenacity that is embraced by the fan base. It also helps that he takes his game to another level in the playoffs, which was the case yet again last season in the Dodgers World Series run.
But before he was able to spark a magical run for the Boys in Blue, it nearly all came crashing down.
Hernández was a guest on a recent episode of Dodgers Territory where he spoke about nearly being DFA’d but thanks to a simple discovery, turned his season around and potentially saved his career.
Dodgers Enrique Hernández Reveals What Turned His Season Around
"Kinda saved my season, and who knows if it saved my career. There was a chance that I was a couple days away from getting DFA'd last year."

In July of last year, Hernández was batting a paltry .167 with a .231 OBP. In August that number began to rise as his average jumped to .273. In September, he improved his average even more to .308.
During the episode, Hernández credits this turnaround to the discovery of something going on with his right eye and beginning to use glasses while playing.
“Finding out about my right eye, was pretty key,” Hernández says. And then, of course, working on some things I wasn’t doing great mechanically. Saved my season, and who knows if it saved my career. There was a chance that I was a couple of days away from getting DFA’d last year…Being able to do the hardest thing that there is in all of sports which is hitting a baseball when you can’t really see the spin of the ball, it’s a pretty hard thing to do, but I’m glad we have that resolved for now.”
It sounds simple, but a pair of glasses certainly seemed to have resolved a lot of the hitting issues that were hindering Hernández during the middle of the season.
So far this season, he has already notched a home run after two games in the Tokyo Series. The Dodgers open the season at home on March 27th against the Detroit Tigers.
