Dodgers New Star Infielder At Risk Of Not Making Roster?

The Los Angeles Dodgers had an action-packed offseason that saw them fortify their roster for another World Series run. One of the key acquisitions, among the many, was the signing of KBO star Hyeseong Kim.

Upon his signing, it was assumed that he would take over the duties of starting second baseman. That was further exemplified when the Dodgers traded their World Series-winning second baseman Gavin Lux shortly after signing Kim.

However, just a few games into Spring Training, GM Brandon Gomes is noncommittal on whether Kim will be the starter on Opening Day.

“I just think there’s so much unknown between now and Opening Day, seeing how the roster plays out and how he looks,” Gomes told reporters. “But we’re excited with what he’s brought to the table. The energy, the defense has been really impressive. And then the work ethic.”

Kim made a name for himself with his glove and defense, so that part is not a huge surprise. His teammate, Miguel Rojas, even said that he had the potential to be a Gold Glover, recently.

But at the plate was going to be the biggest transition for Kim, as it is for not just international players, but all first-time Major Leaguers.

“He already has really good bat-to-ball skills, which is a good foundation, obviously, “Gomes continued. “And then being able to impact the ball a little bit more and ride out some off-speed pitches in a better way, there’s definitely some pieces there that we feel like we can address to tap into the upside.”

So far, in 12 at-bats in Spring Training, Kim has only one hit, posting a .083 average. But there is no reason to panic. The transition to the majors takes time and both Gomes and manager Dave Roberts feel confident that Kim just needs more reps.

Could he start the season in the Minor Leagues? Certainly.

Would that derail the Dodgers’ chances to repeat as World Series Champs? Absolutely not.

Moreso than the other major professional sports, baseball is a process. Attention to detail and repetition is the key to success. Hyeseong Kim just needs time, and plenty of at-bats.
