Dave Roberts is refining his perspective on the 2025 Los Angeles Dodgers. While he acknowledges the team’s fortunate position, possessing a lineup that resembles an MLB All-Star roster, he has identified two areas of uncertainty during spring training. Notably, these uncertainties are distinct from the team’s well-documented injuries, including that of All-Star catcher Will Smith. As reported by Bill Plunkett of the Orange County Register on Saturday, the two-time World Series champion manager conveyed that the Dodgers are exceptionally strong across the board, with the exception of two specific positions. Roberts has publicly indicated which areas the team is still evaluating.
Los Angeles Dodgers Still Evaluating Center Fielders and Second Basemen
“Dave Roberts today said Dodgers position-player roster/lineup seems ‘very clear everywhere but CF and 2B,’” Plunkett revealed via X, referring to center field and second base as the remaining positions of uncertainty.
Following his initial remarks, Dave Roberts was then asked to elaborate on his strategy for addressing the center field and second base positions.
“Asked if the CF-2B picture had changed since team arrived in spring training: ‘We’re still sussing it out. It’s pretty similar. Good question.’”

Social media platforms quickly became a forum for fan suggestions, with many advocating for Tommy Edman to assume the role of second baseman.
Edman, a versatile utility player and outfielder for the Dodgers, possesses prior experience at second base. Notably, during his tenure with the St. Louis Cardinals, he earned the 2021 Gold Glove Award, recognizing him as the National League’s premier defensive second baseman. Edman joined the Dodgers on July 29, 2024, in a three-team trade involving the Dodgers, Cardinals, and Chicago White Sox, and subsequently hit a two-run home run in game 6 against the Mets, helping propel the Dodgers to the World Series.
In addition to Edman, fans also mentioned Andy Pages and Kike Hernandez as viable options. Hernandez, with experience at every position except catcher, offers exceptional versatility, making him a potential solution for both the center field and second base vacancies.
Andy Pages presents a youthful option for center field. The 24-year-old Cuban native earned a starting assignment in center field on April 16th against the Washington Nationals. While Pages did not see any batting or fielding action during the World Series, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts could explore providing him with early-season playing time in center field to cultivate his confidence at the Major League Baseball level.
