Los Angeles Dodgers, Dustin May Hits Important Recovery Milestone

The Los Angeles Dodgers boast an exceptionally deep pitching staff, even before factoring in the potential return of Dustin May. While his place in the starting rotation isn’t guaranteed at this point, May has made further progress in his recovery from a prolonged injury absence.

May debuted with the Dodgers in 2019, but his appearances have been limited by various injuries, never exceeding 14 games in a single season. He did not pitch at all during the Dodgers’ 2024 World Series-winning campaign. However, his return to the pitching staff appears to be on the horizon for 2025, as he recently completed a bullpen session on Thursday.

Los Angeles’ starting rotation boasts an impressive group of pitchers, including Shohei Ohtani, Blake Snell, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Roki Sasaki, and Clayton Kershaw. When fully healthy, the team may not have an immediate opening for Dustin May in the rotation. However, with both Ohtani and Kershaw unavailable to start the season, May’s return from injury could prove to be more important than initially anticipated, filling a critical gap in the pitching staff.

Even when the rotation is healthy, May could still contribute in a bullpen role, a potentially beneficial option given his history of injuries. In his most recent appearances on the mound, May recorded a 2.63 ERA and struck out 34 batters in nine starts. However, it’s reasonable to expect that it may take some time for him to regain his top form and shake off any rust. The positive news for May is that LA’s deep pitching talent can accommodate his return. Assuming he navigates spring training without incident, he should have a place on the pitching staff, whether in the rotation or the bullpen.
