The Los Angeles Dodgers commenced their 2025 title defense without key players Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman in either of the two Tokyo Series games against the Chicago Cubs.
Betts’ absence was anticipated due to fatigue and weight loss upon the team’s arrival in Japan. Although he was included on the Opening Day roster, he returned to Los Angeles early to continue his recovery.
Freeman, initially in the lineup for Opening Day, was scratched shortly before the game due to left rib discomfort. This injury was the same one he experienced during last year’s postseason, though he assured it was significantly less severe. Freeman had indicated a “75%” chance of playing Wednesday.
Freddie Freeman Expected Back To Los Angeles Dodgers Lineup Before Regular Season

Despite his absence, the Dodgers expressed optimism about Freeman’s progress. “He lobbied hard, like he always does. He wants to play every day. Kind of prepared to play, but ultimately conceded to myself and the training staff,” manager Dave Roberts said before the finale at the Tokyo Dome. “It’s just too early in the season to potentially put him in harm’s way. Feels much better than he did yesterday. My expectation is he’ll be good to go for the Freeway Series.”
The Dodgers are set to take on the Anaheim Angels on March 23rd, 24th and 25th for the “Freeway Series.”
The Dodgers, benefiting from the time zone difference, will have a break before facing the Angels on Sunday. The exhibition Freeway Series will begin at Dodger Stadium and conclude with two games in Anaheim. Kiké Hernández filled in at first base during Freeman’s absence in Tokyo.

Given Freeman’s improved condition and the possibility of scar tissue from his previous injury, it remains unclear if Hernández will continue in that role. “Last year I needed help getting to my car that first day. I can walk, I can take deep breaths.
Just felt a little something in my rib, and with it being the first game, didn’t want it to be something lingering,” Freeman said. “Dr. ElAttrache was saying it could be scar tissue from it healing, and I did ramp up my volume the last two days, trying to fix my swing from last week.”
