Los Angeles Dodgers Star Mookie Betts Inviting New Challenge in 2026

It might sound like Los Angeles Dodgers star Mookie Betts wants to switch teams next spring, but Dodgers fans can relax. Betts isn’t looking to leave Southern California, at least not in the context of his MLB career. Instead, Betts recently made it clear that he wants to represent Team USA in the 2026 World Baseball Classic. The eight-time All-Star had a strong showing in the 2023 tournament, hitting .313 with an RBI and seven runs scored.

“I think any player would want to do it,” Betts said, according to The Los Angeles Times, expressing the common sentiment among players about participating in this international competition. As of Tuesday morning, New York Yankees superstar Aaron Judge is the only confirmed player for Team USA in 2026. Judge will take over as Team USA’s captain, replacing Los Angeles Angels great Mike Trout.

Trout himself indicated earlier this spring that he intends to play in the 2026 WBC, should the opportunity arise. It’s somewhat surprising to hear Betts so explicitly state his desire to participate in the upcoming WBC. Considering the Dodgers’ consistent pursuit of championships, one might expect Betts—who will be 33 in October—to prioritize avoiding injury and focusing solely on preparing for the 2026 MLB season.

Of course, players can sustain injuries even during spring training. New York Yankees ace Gerrit Cole, who recently underwent Tommy John surgery, is a stark reminder of that reality. However, the potential risks associated with WBC extend beyond typical baseball activities.

Every player on a contending team, and the team’s management likely remembers New York Mets closer Edwin Díaz’s season-ending right knee injury during the 2023 WBC. The Mets’ pitching staff suffered significantly without Díaz, posting an overall ERA of 4.30, a notable increase from their 3.57 ERA with him the previous year. (It’s worth noting that the 2023 Mets also played without Jacob deGrom, who had a 3.08 ERA in 64.1 innings the year before.)

Regardless, Betts has ample time to finalize his plans for 2026. For now, it appears likely that he will be playing shortstop for Team USA in the next World Baseball Classic.
