Los Angeles Dodgers Face Serious Questions About Rookie Pitcher’s Future

Roki Sasaki, entering the 2025 season as MLB’s top prospect, has faced a challenging start to his rookie campaign. Despite two underwhelming outings, the Los Angeles Dodgers remain steadfast in their belief in his talent. The primary issue has been Sasaki’s command, resulting in a high walk rate and making him predictable to opposing hitters.

While external expectations were lofty, the Dodgers, under manager Dave Roberts, have maintained a measured approach since spring training. Roberts emphasized the importance of throwing strikes, competing effectively, and learning from each experience.

Although Sasaki has struggled with the first two objectives, the learning process is deemed crucial for his development.

Despite calls for Sasaki to be optioned to Triple-A Oklahoma City, Roberts has been encouraged by the 23-year-old’s response to adversity.

“I think that he’s handling it well. I want him to continue to stay out there and stay visible. He’s not used to having some struggles, and I think that this is an opportunity for him to fight back, answer back,” Roberts said. He also noted Sasaki’s productive bullpen session, indicating his commitment to improvement.

The Dodgers are providing a supportive environment for Sasaki, but Roberts believes mentorship should occur organically. He has refrained from forcing any guidance from Shohei Ohtani or Yoshinobu Yamamoto, allowing those relationships to develop naturally.

Sasaki’s next start is scheduled for Saturday against the Philadelphia Phillies at Citizens Bank Park. While the hostile environment presents a challenge, Roberts remains confident in Sasaki’s ability to handle it.

“I mean, yeah, they’re hard on the visitors, as well as the home team. I don’t think so. I think he’s going to handle himself fine. I really do,” Roberts stated.
