In youth leagues, the team’s most talented player is often placed in the leadoff position to maximize their plate appearances. The rationale is simple: the best player should have the most opportunities to contribute.
Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts employs a similar philosophy with Shohei Ohtani.
While Ohtani possesses the offensive prowess to bat second, third, or cleanup for any team in the league, Roberts has chosen to utilize him as the leadoff hitter. Ohtani may not conform to the traditional profile of a leadoff hitter, but his extraordinary talent transcends conventional categorization.
Los Angeles Dodgers Have No Plans to Move Shohei Ohtani Out of Dodgers’ Leadoff Spot
Earlier in the season, when the team was experiencing some offensive struggles, Roberts was questioned about the possibility of moving Ohtani out of the leadoff spot and positioning him between Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman. Roberts explained his decision:
“I think we’d be back in that same position of having the lefties back-to-back. Also, I just feel that there are guys who are gonna perform better than they have, and Shohei will ultimately get those [RBI] opportunities.”
Roberts’s strategic consideration of alternating left-handed and right-handed hitters is a sound baseball principle. A lineup with consecutive left-handed or right-handed hitters allows opposing managers to more easily deploy relief pitchers with favorable matchups.
In the Dodgers’ lineup, Ohtani’s ability to reach base frequently sets the table for the potent hitting of Betts and Freeman, who are well-positioned to drive him in.
Therefore, it is logical to expect Ohtani to remain in the leadoff position. Placing him atop the order maximizes his opportunities to utilize his exceptional talent and contribute to the Dodgers’ offense.
