Dave Roberts, the manager of the reigning World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers, faces an enviable yet challenging task entering the 2025 season: selecting a closer from a talented pool of relief pitchers.

The Dodgers bolstered their bullpen during the offseason with the additions of left-hander Tanner Scott and right-hander Kirby Yates, joining a group that already includes high-caliber relievers such as Michael Kopech, Evan Phillips, and Blake Treinen. This depth of talent allows Roberts to explore various closing options, as each pitcher has demonstrated the ability to effectively finish games.

In a recent interview with MLB Network Radio on SiriusXM, Roberts provided an update on his plans for the closer role, naming which pitcher he envisions assuming the primary responsibility to begin the season.

Roberts named Tanner Scott as their primary closer for the upcoming season.

Scott, who signed a four-year, $72 million contract with the team in January, was selected over fellow relievers Kirby Yates, Evan Phillips, and Blake Treinen.

The 30-year-old left-hander enjoyed a successful 2024 season, posting a 1.74 ERA with nine wins in 72 appearances for the Miami Marlins and the San Diego Padres. Throughout his eight-year MLB career, Scott has amassed a 31-24 record with 55 saves and a 3.56 ERA across stints with the Orioles, Marlins, and Padres.

Dodgers entered the 2024 season with Evan Phillips serving as their primary closer. However, the team demonstrated a commitment to bullpen flexibility throughout the year, utilizing a variety of pitchers in high-leverage situations.

The acquisition of Michael Kopech from the Chicago White Sox at the trade deadline further strengthened the bullpen, with Kopech contributing significantly to the team’s success down the stretch, recording four wins and six saves in 24 appearances.

Furthermore, right-hander Blake Treinen played a crucial role in the postseason, recording three saves as Los Angeles ultimately secured their eighth World Series championship.
