Los Angeles Dodgers Add Another Pitcher To Injury List In Another Brutal Blow

Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts announced Tuesday that right-handed pitcher Tony Gonsolin will begin the 2025 season on the injured list. This decision stems from a back injury Gonsolin sustained while weightlifting. Consequently, Dustin May has been named the team’s No. 5 starter.

Gonsolin entered spring training vying for the No. 5 starter role alongside May and Bobby Miller. With his greater starting experience, he was considered a frontrunner. However, this recent injury has altered the situation, preventing him from securing a spot on the Opening Day roster.

Dustin May, who delivered his strongest Cactus League performance last week with three shutout innings and three strikeouts, will remain in Arizona to continue his preparation. His first regular-season start is tentatively scheduled for April 1st, providing ample time for him to build up his pitch count.

Gonsolin underwent Tommy John surgery and made three rehab appearances in 2024, but he was not activated for the postseason. May, who had a Tommy John revision surgery in 2023, returned to action in 2024 before suffering a life-threatening torn esophagus after consuming lettuce. He underwent emergency surgery and made a full recovery.

May’s arduous journey back has culminated in him earning the No. 5 starter position. Gonsolin, meanwhile, will hope that his back injury proves to be a minor setback in what was intended to be a comeback year for the 2022 All-Star.
