Key Los Angeles Dodgers Starter Still Struggling With 9 Month Old Injury

Los Angeles Dodgers catcher Will Smith has been managing a persistent bone bruise in his left ankle for nearly nine months, as he disclosed to The Athletic’s Fabian Ardaya and other reporters this past weekend. The injury occurred on June 8th during Los Angeles’ 11-3 victory over the New York Yankees when Smith attempted to break up a double play with a slide into second base.

Despite experiencing discomfort since the incident, Smith did not require a stint on the injured list and largely avoided missing game time. However, the issue has lingered, even after an offseason of rest, leading to his delayed participation in Spring Training games until last Friday.

Smith reports that the soreness is primarily triggered by running, with no adverse effects on his catching or hitting. Yet, as Ardaya points out, Smith’s post-injury performance suggests a potential impact. Prior to June 8th, he posted a .292/.361/.498 slash line in 238 plate appearances, which subsequently declined to .213/.301/.382 in 306 plate appearances, and further to a .568 OPS in 65 postseason plate appearances.

Los Angeles General Manager Brandon Gomes has indicated that the team may be more inclined to provide Smith with additional rest days to prioritize his health and overall well-being, particularly as the team aim for another extended postseason run.
