Kleber has been sidelined for over two months due to recovery from a surgically repaired right foot, delaying his Lakers debut. Head coach JJ Redick has indicated that an update on Kleber’s status will be provided before the Lakers’ upcoming game against the Golden State Warriors.

Kleber’s last appearance was on January 25th, while playing for the Dallas Mavericks against the Boston Celtics, where he played 11 minutes and recorded one point, one rebound, one assist, and one block on 0-of-6 shooting. Prior to the injury, the 33-year-old averaged 3.0 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 1.3 assists in 34 games, shooting 38.5% from the field and 26.5% from three-point range.

In his eight seasons with the Mavericks (2017-2025), Kleber has played 440 regular-season games, averaging 6.4 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 1.2 assists in 22.3 minutes per game. His postseason experience includes 44 games, where he averaged 6.4 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 1.2 assists in 24.2 minutes per game. Kleber, a German native, entered the NBA as an undrafted free agent, signing with Dallas before the 2017-18 season.

Kleber’s acquisition was part of a significant trade involving the Mavericks, Lakers, and Utah Jazz. The trade sent Kleber, Markieff Morris, and Luka Doncic to the Lakers in exchange for Anthony Davis, Max Christie, and a 2029 first-round pick. Jalen Hood-Schifino and a future second-round pick were also sent to the Jazz.

The trade, considered unexpected, has significantly benefited the Lakers. However, Kleber’s potential contribution remains uncertain. If he returns to play this season, he would provide the Lakers with a valuable floor-spacing option for Luka Doncic, LeBron James, and Austin Reaves.
