Los Angeles Lakers HC Shares New “Playoff Stuff,” “Slow Drip” Strategy

The Los Angeles Lakers are set to commence their playoff journey, hosting the Minnesota Timberwolves for Game 1 of their first-round series on Saturday. L.A. harbors ambitions for a deep postseason run and appears well-positioned to make a significant push, potentially reaching the Western Conference Finals. Fueled by a talented roster and what seems, on paper, to be a favorable path through the playoffs, expectations within the Lakers organization and among their fans are understandably elevated.

The Lakers will dedicate considerable time to scouting and preparing for a Timberwolves team that has been performing exceptionally well and enters the playoffs with significant momentum. While the matchup is acknowledged as challenging, a strong sense of belief permeates the Lakers’ locker room. Head coach JJ Redick is already proactively implementing strategic adjustments in anticipation of the series.

Jovan Buha of The Athletic detailed Redick’s preparations, noting that he is fine-tuning his approach as L.A. gears up for the challenge Minnesota presents. Redick stated that the Lakers will introduce “a little bit of playoff stuff” but cautioned that “it’s not necessarily gonna be everything at once this week.” He explained his strategy, saying, “We’ll have to slow drip. That’s the approach that I think is gonna work best for our group.”

Redick has expressed significant respect for the Timberwolves, offering high praise and acknowledging the difficulty they present. “We have a lot of work,” Redick said. “They’re a really good basketball team.” He further elaborated, “It’s a very difficult opponent. They’ve played as well as anyone lately, and I believe they’re one of four teams in the top 10 in offense and defense. So, they present a lot of problems.” The Lakers are preparing to face a Minnesota team that boasts top-10 rankings in both offensive and defensive ratings. The Timberwolves also feature a top-tier player in Anthony Edwards, who has demonstrated the ability to compete at the highest level against players like Luka Doncic.

While the Western Conference presents no easy paths, this particular matchup is perceived as more advantageous for the Lakers compared to potential series against the Golden State Warriors or the Denver Nuggets. This series is expected to be a hard-fought battle for L.A., and Redick anticipates the Timberwolves’ best effort. Ultimately, however, he remains optimistic that the Lakers’ capabilities will prevail.
