The Los Angeles Lakers’ acquisition of Luka Dončić, a monumental trade that saw Anthony Davis depart for the Dallas Mavericks, has shifted the team’s focus toward identifying a suitable center for the future.
The Lakers had recently agreed to a trade that would have brought Mark Williams from the Charlotte Hornets to Los Angeles. It was reported that Williams was hand-selected by Doncic because he possessed what Doncic believed to be ideal attributes to play alongside him. However, this deal was subsequently rescinded due to Williams failing his physical examination. Reports have emerged regarding Dončić’s reaction to this unexpected turn of events.
Luka Doncic In It With Los Angeles Lakers For The Long Term

The failed trade for Mark Williams undoubtedly generated speculation regarding Luka Dončić’s reaction, given the potential for a long-term partnership with the young and talented center. However, according to Marc Stein, Dončić demonstrated a mature understanding of the situation.
Stein reports that Dončić acknowledged the complexities of acquiring a suitable center and expressed his appreciation for the Lakers’ proactive efforts to address this critical need, despite the setback with Williams. He reportedly indicated that he was “impressed” by the team’s swift response and commitment to finding a suitable solution, suggesting a willingness to trust the team’s long-term plan.

“Yet there has been no tangible dismay from the Doncic camp about his new team walking away from the Williams deal,” Stein wrote.
“Sources told The Stein Line that Doncic, in his first discussion about roster construction with Lakers vice president of basketball operations Rob Pelinka, told Pelinka that he understood it might take until the summer to make that addition … and came away impressed by how swiftly the Lakers initially moved to try to address that void.”
The Lakers attempted to add another center after rescinding the Williams trade, adding Alex Len to the squad shortly before the All-Star break. He played just one game for the team and was far from impressive. This may shift over time, but the Lakers may need to rely on him more heavily because of the facial contusion suffered by starting center, Jaxson Hayes.
