Colston Loveland Shares Big Los Angeles Chargers Update, Per New NFL Combine Reporting

No draft prospect has been mock-drafted to the Los Angeles Chargers more than Colston Loveland. It makes sense: head coach Jim Harbaugh recruited him to play at the University of Michigan and now his new team is in desperate need of a tight end. In addition, Greg Roman’s offenses have always heavily featured the position as an integral part of the blocking scheme and passing attack.

But according to reporting by the Los Angeles Times’s Thuc Nhi Nguyen, the Chargers have not been in contact with the 6 foot 5, 245-pound draft prospect.

In 2024, a standout player for the Wolverines, now a highly anticipated first-round NFL draft prospect, distinguished himself as a crucial offensive contributor. He tallied 56 receptions for 582 yards and five touchdowns. Notably, this performance represented 35 percent of the team’s total receiving yardage and nearly half (5 out of 12) of their receiving touchdowns during the past fall season.

This begs the question if the team is interested in drafting a tight end in the first round. Loveland is roundly thought of as the second-best TE in the draft class, behind only Tyler Warren. Warren isn’t likely to be available at pick 22.

While tight end is a pressing need, it is one they may opt to look to free agency to solve to find a more experienced option.

The Chargers’ biggest need is on the other side of the ball as more than 2000 snaps are about to hit free agency. This increases the probability that they will be targeting a defensive lineman in this draft.

Many fans are clamoring for the team to take an offensive weapon in light of the struggles in the 2024 playoffs. But that was also the case last year when many presumed Malik Nabers would get the nod at pick No. 5. The Chargers opted for tackle, Joe Alt in that instance.
