Doubt Surrounds Los Angeles Chargers Former 1st Round Pick After NFL Draft

There is no question that the offensive line has been the top priority for the Los Angeles Chargers since the new regime took office. They drafted Joe Alt with the 5th overall pick last season and spent a good amount of cash in free agency, signing Mekhi Becton and looking for their next center.

When asked about the future of 2022’s 17th overall draft pick, Zion Johnson, the team remained non-committal. According to The Athletic’s Daniel Popper, “Joe Hortiz said Chargers have not yet decided on whether they are picking up Zion Johnson’s fifth-year option.”

Johnson struggled last season, allowing the most pressures per snap and total sacks allowed in his career, along with the worst run blocking grade across all Chargers offensive linemen last year.

Earlier this offseason, the team suggested that Johnson would be in the mix at a new position, competing for the center job with Bradley Bozeman and Andre James. Johnson has played at center at neither the college nor the NFL level.

Compounding the uncertainty, the Chargers drafted Branson Taylor, who is slated to move from tackle to guard at the pro level. He is far from a plug-and-play offensive lineman.

The Athletic’s Dane Brugler wrote of Taylor, “Taylor has workable tools but needs to iron out the inefficiencies in his game, which would allow him to play with more focus as a finisher. Several teams believe his best pro position will be inside at guard.”

At this moment, the Chargers have three of the five offensive line positions solidified. With this recent development, guard and center are still up for grabs.
