Failed Los Angeles Chargers Coach Gets Another Shot In The Big Easy

When the Los Angeles Chargers hired Brandon Staley as their head coach, there was a lot of optimism. He was very young in his coaching career but had just led the number one defensive unit with the Rams. He also came from the famed Sean McVay tree.

After a promising first year, the shine started to fade, and Staley’s final year in LA was a disaster. He was ultimately fired after an embarrassing loss to the Las Vegas Raiders, and the Chargers hired Jim Harbaugh this past offseason.

Staley landed in San Francisco in an assistant role, but the two sides parted ways after the season ended.

Well, now the failed head coach is getting another shot with a familiar face.

Newly hired Saints head coach Kellen Moore has decided to bring in his former boss as his new defensive coordinator.

In Staley’s final season with the Chargers, he had hired Kellen Moore as his offensive coordinator.

While the season did not go as planned, the two obviously built some chemistry, and trust was created.

Staley’s defense steadily declined while he was the head coach, but I believe that had more to do with having to be the CEO of the entire team instead of just focusing on the defensive scheme and coaching.

We will see if he can get the Saints defense turned around and do something similar to what he did as the Rams defensive coordinator.

It is worth noting that he will not have Aaron Donald or Jalen Ramsey down in New Orleans, and the Saints are in a terrible cap situation.

Staley will have his work cut out for him, but it is an opportunity to prove to the rest of the league that he still has to chops to coach a top defensive unit.
