The Los Angeles Chargers, in their quest to provide Justin Herbert with much-needed offensive support, are potentially exploring the trade market for a star wide receiver. However, the team must exercise caution to avoid overpaying, particularly in the case of San Francisco 49ers receiver Brandon Aiyuk.
Aiyuk, despite recently signing a four-year, $120 million contract extension, has been the subject of trade rumors, with the Chargers emerging as a logical destination. Yet, Jason Reed of Bolt Beat cautions against making a significant financial commitment for a player who may not possess true No. 1 receiver capabilities.
Is Brandon Aiyuk Too Big Of A Risk For Los Angeles Chargers?

“It’s not fair to completely judge someone on a six-game sample size but there were already concerns about Aiyuk’s ceiling prior to the 2024 season,” Reed wrote. “That is the entire reason why the 49ers were so hesitant to sign Aiyuk is the perfect example of an overqualified WR2 who is getting WR1 money.”
Aiyuk’s 2024 season was hampered by a mid-season ACL tear, and his on-field production, 25 catches for 374 yards, was underwhelming. Coupled with his heavily backloaded contract and the uncertainties surrounding his injury recovery, Aiyuk’s value becomes a subject of concern.
“On paper, Aiyuk’s contract is not as bad as it seems but it is still a pretty penny to pay for someone who might have already reached his ceiling and is coming off an injury that may limit him in 2025,” Reed concluded.
Realistically, a trade for Aiyuk seems unlikely for the Chargers. Their reluctance to invest heavily in D.K. Metcalf suggests a similar approach with Aiyuk. Therefore, the team is more likely to address their wide receiver needs through the upcoming NFL Draft.
