Throughout the offseason, Michigan tight end Colston Loveland has been a frequent name associated with the Los Angeles Chargers in mock drafts. This connection is largely attributed to the head coach Jim Harbaugh, given his strong ties to the Michigan program. With the team holding the 22nd overall pick in the upcoming draft, Loveland has become a particularly intriguing prospect.

However, recent reports have shed light on a potential concern regarding Loveland’s health. Daniel Popper of The Athletic revealed that Loveland played through a shoulder injury for a significant portion of the 2024 season.
Popper’s report highlighted the following observation from a mock draft: “Loveland didn’t get high marks as a blocker from the opposing coaches I spoke to, but I’ve heard from UM sources that he had a shoulder injury he played through for much of the season.”
Loveland was seen in a sling throughout the NFL Combine.
Medical evaluations play a crucial role in draft assessments, and the Chargers will undoubtedly exercise caution when examining the severity of Loveland’s shoulder injury. While his willingness to play through pain demonstrates his toughness and commitment, it also raises questions about the long-term implications. He will need to understand that, sometimes, playing through an injury can be more detrimental than helpful to a team.
The Athletic’s Dane Brugler ranks Loveland as the 2nd best TE in the draft and 11th best prospect, writing, “His final season was marred by injury and below-average quarterback play, but Loveland still led Michigan in receiving in nine of his 10 games and set program records at tight end. With his speed and ball skills, he can line up anywhere on the field and win as a QB-friendly, multi-level receiving threat. He has the most upside of any pass catcher in this draft class.”
