The Los Angeles Chargers have been in desperate need of a reliable wide receiver since before the team moved on from Keenan Allen and Mike Williams ahead of last season. That is why the team has been linked to every draftable, tradeable, signable wide receiver since 2023, including DK Metcalf — who became available when he demanded a trade away from the Seattle Seahawks.
While it was a fun idea, Metcalf ended up going to the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Cam Heyward Tampers With Los Angeles Chargers Trade Target

As it turns out, Steelers defensive lineman Cam Heyward played a pivotal role in securing Metcalf, revealing on his “Not Just Football” podcast that he made a last-minute recruiting pitch.
“I was in California at the time, and I heard DK was in town, and then someone was like, ‘Oh he’s going to the Chargers and so I hit up one of my friends, Tracy Perlman and she was like, ‘Yeah, I hear he might be going.’ I’m like, ‘Text DK. Tell him to come with us.’ And then like in the next week, he was already with us. I don’t know how that happened, but DK was all about it,” Heyward recounted.
This anecdote highlights the significant influence of personal connections in the NFL. While the Steelers’ front office, including Mike Tomlin, undoubtedly pursued Metcalf, Heyward’s direct appeal appears to have been decisive. The power of these relationships, combined with the Steelers’ historical prestige, can sway even high-profile trades.
The Chargers have shown a similar interest in Steelers talent, having signed three of Pittsburgh’s 2024 starters in free agency. However, they lacked the influential figure of Cam Heyward, whose persuasive efforts ultimately swayed Metcalf toward the Steelers.
