Los Angeles Chargers Draft Serious Offensive Speed In 1st Round Of New Mock Draft

Leading up to the 2025 NFL Combine’s 40-yard dash for wide receivers, much of the pre-event buzz centered on Isaiah Bond’s bold claim of surpassing Xavier Worthy’s record-breaking 4.21-second time from the previous year.

However, Bond’s performance fell short, and surprisingly, he wasn’t even the fastest among his teammates. That distinction belonged to Matthew Golden, who clocked an impressive 4.30-second time, establishing himself as the fastest receiver at the Combine. This result has brought Golden into sharp focus, particularly for the Los Angeles Chargers, who should seriously consider him with their 22nd overall pick.

According to the 33rd Team’s latest mock draft, that is exactly what the Chargers will do.

“Ladd McConkey is an excellent slot receiver, but the Chargers need another reliable weapon for Justin Herbert,” writes NFL analyst Tyler Brooke. “While Matthew Golden is a bit small for an outside receiver, he checks so many boxes as a do-it-all kind of Z that can run deep, snap off routes in the intermediate/short game, or haul in catches while a defender is draped over him. That’s the kind of reliable weapon that the Chargers need to open up their offense.”

New reporting suggests that wide receiver is among the Chargers’ top round one priorities.

While wide receiver might not be the Chargers’ most pressing need, the team recognizes its proximity to contention, especially with Justin Herbert entering his prime. Consequently, investing in dynamic playmakers to complement Herbert is a strategic move. Golden’s capabilities extend beyond mere speed. The Houston transfer showcased his talent against top-tier competition at Texas in 2024, recording 58 receptions for 987 yards and nine touchdowns. Notably, he displayed clutch performance during the team’s College Football Playoff victory over ASU.

The Chargers have demonstrated a willingness to invest in wide receivers, selecting Quentin Johnston from TCU at No. 21 in 2023 and Ladd McConkey at No. 34 in the most recent draft. McConkey’s rookie season was highly productive, with 1,149 yards and seven touchdowns on 82 receptions. In contrast, Johnston’s performance has raised some concerns. These concerns, coupled with Joshua Palmer’s exit in free agency, make Golden an attractive option for the Chargers, assuming he’s available at their pick.
