Los Angeles Chargers Draft ‘Tee Higgins-Type’ Receiver In New Mock Draft

With the NFL Draft just over two weeks away, all 32 teams across the league are in the final stages of their preparations for the three-day selection event. This includes the Los Angeles Chargers, now under the leadership of new head coach Jim Harbaugh.

As the draft approaches, NFL.com’s Jeffri Chadiha identified the most pressing question facing each of the 16 AFC teams. For Los Angeles, the primary concern appears to be bolstering their offensive weaponry.

“There was no mystery about what the Chargers offense needed at the end of last season. As much as head coach Jim Harbaugh raved about quarterback Justin Herbert, there simply weren’t enough weapons on that side of the ball to consistently scare defenses.”

This isn’t new news to close observers of the Chargers, including Athletic’s beat reporter, Daniel Popper, who released a 7-round mock draft this week. He thinks they should go with Arizona WR Tetairoa McMillan. Dane Brugler, also of The Athletic, compares McMillan to Tee Higgins.

“If McMillan is there, I think he is the no-brainer pick. He is the type of big body — over 6-foot-4, 213 pounds — the Chargers need on the outside to complement slot receiver Ladd McConkey,” Popper writes. “The team signed Mike Williams in free agency, but I think they need to invest further in this type of skill set, given Williams’ age and injury history.”

The big fear for a team drafting McMillian is his lack of speed at each level, as well as his ability to separate. He opted not to run the 40-yard sprint at the NFL Combine but posted a 1.58 10-yard split and a 4.53, 40 time at his pro day.

Brugler ranks McMillan as his top receiver in the draft, writing, “Overall, McMillan is only average in the speed and separation categories, but he is a long and limber athlete with exceptional tracking and ball-winning instincts. He fits the Tee Higgins mold as a unique playmaker because of his size and catch-point skills.”
