Los Angeles Chargers Predicted To Lose Khalil Mack To NFC Contender

The Los Angeles Chargers have a lot of impending questions as we enter free agency, including their star EDGE Khalil Mack. They answered one of those last night when they re-signed Elijah Molden to a 3-year deal.

Outside of the wide receiver room, the biggest question centers around their aging EDGE room. Joey Bosa still has one year left on his contract, but there are rumors swirling that he may end up being a cap casualty.

Khalil Mack is set to hit free agency, and while the Chargers would love to have him back and retire in the Powder Blues, he may test the market for his final contract.

You have to think that Mack will put joining a contender higher on his list than the highest-bidder, so the Chargers should have a viable shot at retaining him.

However, our friends over at Sportsnaut.com have predicted that he will sign with an NFC contender.

In their One Free Agent Every NFL Team Should Pursue, Matt Johnson has the Detroit Lions signing Khalil Mack.

“…He’s also demonstrated to be most effective when paired with another high-end pass rusher,” Johnson writes. “Putting him on the opposite side of Aidan Hutchinson would take the Detroit Lions pass rush to another level…He’s the perfect final piece to add to the Lions defensive line and likely would be willing to sign a one-year deal, giving Detroit long-term financial flexibility.”

There are other rumors out there that Mack is open to a Raiders reunion, so this scenario would be much more palpable if the Chargers do indeed lose him. You would much rather see him go out of the conference than to a division rival.

According to OverTheCap, the Chargers have roughly $70 million in cap space, and they should have even more if they release Joey Bosa. So money should not be an issue if they want to retain Mack.

It will be more of a question of whether they want his veteran leadership or want to go younger at the position.

Will Mack end up in MoTown?
