Los Angeles Chargers Lose Critical Run Stopper In Free Agency

Los Angeles Chargers fans entered the offseason with modest expectations, hoping the team would strategically utilize its substantial cap space to retain key players and make sensible external additions following a successful 2024 campaign. Retaining defensive tackle Poona Ford, a significant contributor, was a high priority for many fans, and with ample cap space, his return seemed assured.

However, Ford will indeed be playing in Los Angeles in 2025, but with the Rams, having signed a three-year, $29.6 million contract. This development is undoubtedly a disappointment for the Chargers and their fans.

The loss of Ford is a significant blow, especially considering his impact on the Chargers’ defense last season and the prevailing expectations that he would re-sign. The fact that he departed for a contract considered manageable by many is particularly surprising. Ford’s annual salary of just under $10 million is viewed as reasonable for a player of his caliber.

The Chargers’ substantial cap space, exceeding $93 million before the Khalil Mack re-signing, makes Ford’s departure even more perplexing. With the market for top-tier free agents largely settled, securing Ford’s return should have been a straightforward decision.

While the specifics of the Chargers’ offer remain undisclosed, it’s conceivable that Ford opted for the Rams due to perceived advantages. However, given Jim Harbaugh’s efforts to cultivate a respected team culture, as evidenced by Khalil Mack’s decision to re-sign, it’s reasonable to assume that a comparable offer from the Chargers would have resulted in Ford’s return.
