Los Angeles Chargers general manager Joe Hortiz has a fun job, but a tough one. He has to fill out a roster full of 90 players, while keeping the NFL’s $279.2 million salary cap in mind.
Some players, like draft picks, have pre-determined salary slots, depending on which number draft pick they were. But other players, ones who have completed their original rookie contract, can sign for any amount they like.
The Chargers have had to made some challenging decisions over the past few years, parting ways with key faces of the franchise such as Keenan Allen and Joey Bosa. Yet, they’ve also added and retained some significant talent too.
However, now one of those players has now been named “overpaid” by a popular sports website.

Khalil Mack named Los Angeles Chargers’ most overpaid player

Who’s the most overpaid player on the Los Angeles Chargers’ roster right now?
According to Bleacher Report’s NFL analyst Brad Gagnon, the answer is nine-time Pro Bowler Khalil Mack.
“The 34-year-old is back at a price of $18 million for 2025, which is extreme considering his limitations as an over-the-hill situational player who has been held to fewer than 10 sacks in five of his last six campaigns.”

Mack did second on the team with six sacks last season, yet he also made an impact as a run-stopper in addition to forcing two fumbles and having nine pass deflections. However, as one of the highest-paid players on the team, it’s fair to say he’s a bit overpaid. That doesn’t necessarily mean he’s not a necessary cog in the wheel.
