Los Angeles Chargers Recent Moves Setting Up Season Defining Camp Battle

The Los Angeles Chargers’ offensive line is undergoing a significant transformation, aimed at providing Justin Herbert with improved protection. The signings of Mekhi Becton and Andre James have solidified the guard and center positions, respectively, introducing new starters and promising a competitive training camp.

Further adjustments are expected to shape the offensive line’s depth. Former first-round pick Zion Johnson is reportedly being considered for a position change to center. Meanwhile, Trey Pipkins III, despite being a potential cut candidate, may transition back to offensive tackle following the departure of another Chargers depth tackle, Foster Sarell, to the Washington Commanders.

Johnson’s move to center creates a potential competition with James and Bradley Bozeman. However, Johnson’s future at guard appears uncertain, especially with LA likely to draft a guard in the early rounds. Pipkins, whose potential release would save the Chargers $6.75 million, struggled at guard but could serve as a valuable swing tackle, providing depth at multiple positions.

These moves, while not considered high-profile, reflect a strategic approach by the Chargers. Even the signing of Becton, who received a significant contract after only one successful season at guard, carries an element of risk. However, with Herbert’s protection a priority, they have opted for a budget-conscious strategy that emphasizes versatility and potential upside. This approach aligns with the current regime’s established pattern.
