The Los Angeles Chargers have initiated discussions regarding a contract extension with left tackle Rashawn Slater, who is entering the final year of his rookie contract.

“We’ve had conversations,” said general manager Joe Hortiz via ESPN’s Kris Rhim“I love Rashawn. And Rashawn is a great player, and he helps us win football games, so I’d love Rashan to be around for a long time.

Since entering the NFL as the 13th overall pick in the 2021 draft, Slater has consistently demonstrated his status as one of the league’s premier left tackles. His debut season was marked by exceptional performance, earning him Pro Bowl and second-team All-Pro honors, as well as a commendable fourth-place finish in the Offensive Rookie of the Year voting. While a torn biceps injury cut his second season short, Slater showcased his resilience and talent by returning with a strong 2023 season, culminating in another Pro Bowl selection in 2024.

The Chargers exercised Slater’s fifth-year option last March, securing him for the 2025 season at a salary of just over $19 million. A long-term contract extension could significantly reduce his cap hit, providing Los Angeles with additional financial flexibility for free agency next month.

Slater, who will turn 26 in March, is expected to seek a contract that reflects his status as one of the league’s top left tackles. For context, fellow 2021 first-round pick Christian Darrisaw signed a $26 million average annual value (APY) extension with the Vikings prior to his age-26 season in 2024. Given the substantial increase in the salary cap this offseason, Slater is likely to exceed that figure and could potentially approach Trent Williams’ $27.5 million-per-year salary.

Both Chargers General Manager Joe Hortiz and Director of Player Personnel Strategy Corey Krawiec have backgrounds with the Baltimore Ravens, a team known for extending franchise cornerstones. As a premier left tackle, Slater undeniably falls into this category, making a long-term extension with the team seem highly probable.
