Los Angeles Chargers Secure Underrated Vet To Defensive Backfield In NFL Free Agency

According to Adam Schefter, Seven-year NFL veteran Donte Jackson has signed a new contract with the Los Angeles Chargers. Jackson, a former second-round draft pick, spent the 2024 season with the Pittsburgh Steelers, having previously played for the Carolina Panthers.

Jackson’s 2024 offseason saw him transition from the Carolina Panthers to the Pittsburgh Steelers in a trade involving Diontae Johnson. However, Jackson’s time in Pittsburgh proved challenging. In 15 games, he recorded five interceptions, eight passes defended, 38 tackles, and two tackles for loss, but received a 49.4 PFF grade, ranking 110th out of 116 eligible players. Despite his efforts, the Steelers were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs by the Baltimore Ravens.

Jackson entered the NFL as a second-round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, selected by the Carolina Panthers. He quickly established himself as a key defensive player, starting all 16 games in his rookie season and recording four interceptions, nine passes defended, one sack, 74 tackles, and four tackles for loss.

Jackson’s performance led to a three-year contract extension in March 2022. Paired with Jaycee Horn, he formed part of a formidable cornerback duo. However, injuries limited his 2022 season to just nine games, during which he recorded two interceptions, 35 tackles, and one tackle for loss. The Panthers missed the playoffs that year.

Jackson remained healthy in the following season but was unable to help the Panthers achieve a winning record. While he earned a respectable 64.3 PFF grade, the team finished with the worst record in the league.

Throughout his NFL career, Donte Jackson has appeared in 95 games, starting 91 of them. He has accumulated 19 interceptions, 54 passes defended, one sack, 341 tackles, 17 tackles for loss, and one quarterback hit.
