Los Angeles Chargers Sign Former First-Round Pick At Wrong Position

The Los Angeles Chargers have been active in free agency, even without making a splash signing. While many have urged them to sign another wide receiver, Joe Hortiz and Co. seem content with the room the way it is until the NFL Draft.

They did, however, decide to add more depth behind Justin Herbert by signing a former first-round pick.

According to Adam Schefter and other media outlets, the Chargers are signing quarterback Trey Lance to a one-year deal worth up to $6.2 million.

Lance will join Taylor Heinicke in the QB room, backing up Justin Herbert.

This is a low-risk move but a bit of a head-scratcher.

While a new league rule allows a third QB on the game day roster without taking up one of the roster spots, $6.2 million is quite a lot of money for a likely 3rd string QB. You can also factor in that they just re-signed Taylor Heinicke to a one-year deal worth $2.5 million.

The Chargers still have plenty of cap space, so this contract should not affect it much, but it just kind of makes you wonder with WR options such as Keenan Allen, Amari Cooper, Tyler Locket, and Diontae Johnson still out there.

Lance was infamously taken 3rd overall in the 2021 NFL Draft after the San Francisco 49ers traded multiple first-round picks to move up.

After just two years in San Francisco, he was traded to the Dallas Cowboys ahead of the 2023 season. He was a healthy scratch the entire year as the 3rd string quarterback.

In his career so far, Lance has completed 81 passes for 1,063 yards, 5 touchdowns, and 4 interceptions. He is still just 24 years old.
