Los Angeles Chargers Secure Another Michigan Man For Jim Harbaugh

The Los Angeles Chargers, despite possessing significant cap space, have made somewhat underwhelming moves in free agency, primarily re-signing Khalil Mack and acquiring Najee Harris. This trend continued with their recent signing of former Washington Commanders cornerback Benjamin St-Juste to a one-year deal, as reported by Mike McCartney of Vayner Sports.

Jim Harbaugh has a prior connection with St-Juste, having coached him during his time at Michigan Wolverines in 2017. St-Juste was later drafted by the Commanders in the third round of the 2021 NFL Draft. While he displayed potential in college, his professional career has been less consistent.

St-Juste became a full-time starter for Washington in his second season, but he struggled with allowing big plays and was frequently targeted by opposing quarterbacks. In the past season, he recorded 71 tackles and seven passes defended, but his performance was marred by a 47.4 overall grade from Pro Football Focus, including a 46.8 coverage grade.

Throughout his NFL career, St-Juste has struggled in coverage, leading to suggestions that he might be better suited for a safety role. The Chargers may be considering this possibility, given St-Juste’s impressive size at 6-foot-3, which contrasts with his apparent lack of the agility required for consistent success at cornerback. The Chargers’ plans for St-Juste in the upcoming season remain to be seen.
