Los Angeles Chargers Executes Massive Trade Up To Secure Unexpected Michigan Player In New Mock Draft

The Los Angeles Chargers are facing a notable need for cornerback depth. With Kristian Fulton joining the Kansas City Chiefs and Asante Samuel Jr.’s free agency status uncertain, the Chargers’ cornerback room has seen significant changes. While Tarheeb Still’s rookie performance was promising, and the addition of Donte Jackson provides a solid veteran presence, the Chargers require further depth to contend with the likes of Patrick Mahomes, Bo Nix, and Geno Smith.

Given the recent departures and the importance of the cornerback position, it’s not surprising that a recent mock draft proposes an aggressive move by the Chargers. While Colston Loveland has been frequently linked to the team, The Athletic’s Ben Standig suggests a different Michigan player: cornerback Will Johnson.

“Jim Harbaugh trading up for a different Michigan man…,” Standig writes, “The pivot turns to cornerback — and jumping the Buccaneers at No. 19… Johnson’s impressive 6-2 size, playmaking and familiarity with the Chargers’ coaching staff make for a smooth transition.”

The proposed trade involves the Chargers acquiring the 17th overall pick and a 2026 fourth-round pick from the Cincinnati Bengals, in exchange for the Chargers’ 22nd, 125th, and 214th picks in 2025, and a 2026 third-round pick. This represents a substantial investment to move up five spots.

Johnson, recruited by Jim Harbaugh in 2022, quickly established himself as a key player at Michigan. He earned All-Big Ten and All-American honors during his three years, recording 19 pass breakups and nine interceptions, and was named the National Championship Defensive MVP after Michigan’s victory over Washington.

The potential selection of Johnson at 17 is somewhat surprising, given his perceived high draft stock. However, concerns about his health have surfaced, as a recurring lower-body injury has kept him out of combine testing and Michigan’s pro day. Johnson is scheduled for a private workout on April 14th, potentially providing Jim Harbaugh with an opportunity to assess his former recruit’s fitness firsthand.
