New Bidding War Driving Up Los Angeles Rams Compensation, Matthew Stafford Trade Looking Imminent

Reports indicate that two teams in rebuilding phases have emerged as frontrunners in the competition to acquire Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford. Dianna Russini of The Athletic has reported that the Las Vegas Raiders and the New York Giants are among the teams expressing “significant interest” in trading for Stafford this offseason.

As ESPN’s Sarah Barshop reported on Saturday, the Los Angeles Rams have granted Matthew Stafford’s agent permission to explore his market value, a move that coincides with ongoing discussions between the team and the quarterback regarding a potential contract restructure.

Adding to the intrigue, Dianna Russini of The Athletic has observed that the interest shown by teams like the Las Vegas Raiders and the New York Giants is generating anticipation across the league. There’s a growing expectation that the Rams will leverage this interest to “drive up the asking price” should they ultimately decide to trade Stafford.

Both the Las Vegas Raiders and the New York Giants are facing significant quarterback vacancies. The Giants’ decision to part ways with Daniel Jones during the 2024 season and the Raiders’ inability to secure a long-term quarterback solution in the 2024 NFL Draft have created clear needs for both organizations. Both teams are positioned to potentially select a top quarterback prospect in the upcoming draft, with the Giants holding the third overall pick and the Raiders holding the sixth.

While Matthew Stafford’s addition would undoubtedly elevate the competitive standing of either the Las Vegas Raiders or the New York Giants, it’s widely understood that neither team is merely a quarterback away from achieving Super Bowl contention in 2025.

Moreover, as reported by NFL Network’s Peter Schrager earlier this week, Stafford is reportedly seeking a contract with an annual salary of at least $50 million. Therefore, it would be a significant commitment for either New York or Las Vegas to agree to such a substantial financial outlay while simultaneously trading valuable assets to acquire him from the Rams.
