Los Angeles Rams Cut 1st Defender Ahead Of NFL Free Agency

The Los Angeles Rams are actively reshaping their roster as they approach the 2025 NFL free agency period. Following the recent trade of Jonah Jackson to the Chicago Bears, the team has now parted ways with Tre’Vius Hodges-Tomlinson, a former Jim Thorpe Award recipient.

According to ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter, the Rams have released Hodges-Tomlinson, who will now be placed on waivers and subsequently become a free agent. Schefter provided further context to the move after speaking with Tomlinson’s agent.

“His agent Kevin Conner said it was ‘a mutual decision’ to give Tre a fresh start. ‘We would like thank Les Snead and Sean McVay for working collaboratively with us to make this happen,’” Schefter shared.

Los Angeles Rams Miss On Big Swing For Small Player

Hodges-Tomlinson’s release marks the first defensive roster change for the Los Angeles Rams as they prepare for the upcoming season, and it’s anticipated that further adjustments are forthcoming. With John Johnson III and Ahkello Witherspoon entering free agency, the Rams’ defensive lineup is poised for significant alterations. Hodges-Tomlinson’s tenure with the team concludes after just two seasons after being drafted in 182nd overall in the 2023 draft.

Despite his 5-foot-8 stature, entered the 2023 NFL Draft with considerable acclaim. The nephew of NFL Hall of Fame running back LaDanian Tomlinson, he distinguished himself with an impressive collegiate career at TCU. In 2022, the defensive back’s exceptional performance, highlighted by a nation-leading 15 pass deflections, earned him First-Team All-American honors.

His collegiate career at TCU was marked by notable achievements, including three interceptions and a career-high 50 tackles (40 solo). He became a key figure in the Horned Frogs’ defense during their unexpected journey to the College Football National Championship game.

His performance at the NFL Combine further solidified his potential, as he impressed scouts with a 4.41-second 40-yard dash, a 39-inch vertical jump, and an 11-foot broad jump, all remarkable feats given his stature.

The Los Angeles Rams selected him in the sixth round of the draft, a move that was widely seen as a promising fit, particularly as the team sought to address the departure of Jalen Ramsey. Even Ramsey himself expressed his approval, extending well wishes to Tomlinson via social media.

However, Hodges-Tomlinson’s transition to the NFL proved challenging. He struggled to secure playing time with the Rams, ultimately not recording any regular-season action this past year.
