Sean McVay’s recent comments at the annual league meeting suggest the Los Angeles Rams aren’t actively prioritizing a quarterback in the 2025 NFL draft, stating he hasn’t dedicated significant focus to the position. However, this doesn’t preclude the Rams from selecting a quarterback later in the draft, with Alabama’s Jalen Milroe emerging as a potential target.
Milroe, known for his exceptional athleticism, presents a unique prospect, though his passing abilities have drawn some scrutiny. Former Raiders GM Mike Mayock believes the Rams would be an ideal landing spot for Milroe, allowing him to develop under the tutelage of veteran quarterback Matthew Stafford.
Los Angeles Rams: Case For Drafting Jalen Milroe

“Most people around the league think he’s a project, and I don’t disagree. They also think he’s got an exciting skillset, and again, I don’t disagree. I don’t think he’s going to go until the second day, and to me the best place for him to land would be the Los Angeles Rams. They have no second-round pick, but I love the fact they’ve got two thirds, and maybe they can go get this kid,” Mayock stated in an interview with Betway.
Mayock elaborated on the potential benefits of this pairing, emphasizing how Stafford could mentor Milroe while also leveraging his skills for game preparation.
“You get him in L.A. playing behind Matthew Stafford, learning every day, similar to a Green Bay situation with an aging quarterback,” he said.
“What a veteran quarterback will do for a rookie is they’ll use him to help them prepare every week. Stafford would go to Milroe and say, ‘I’m going to get all the blitz coverages for the last four weeks, but I want you to go back and pull everything off the tape, and if there’s anything different, I want to see you edit it and present it to me in two days.’ Veteran quarterbacks look at young guys as another opportunity to help them prepare every week, but in doing so it helps the young quarterback learn.”

He further added, “If Milroe goes to the Rams and plays behind Stafford with Sean McVay, who’s one of the best couple of play callers out there, with that offensive staff, I think he’d have a real chance to develop.”
Milroe, projected to be a second or third-round pick, showcased his dual-threat capabilities at Alabama. In 2024, he threw for 2,844 yards and 16 touchdowns, while also rushing for 726 yards and 20 touchdowns.Given McVay’s preference for mobile backup quarterbacks, Milroe’s skill set aligns well with the Rams’ offensive scheme, making him a potentially intriguing option.
The Athletic’s Dane Brugler grades him as the 5th best quarterback and 61st best prospect in the NFL Draft, writing, “There might not be a prospect whose ranking will fluctuate more during the draft process than Milroe’s does. As an athlete and person, he belongs in the first round. But can he develop the passing consistency needed to grow into an NFL starter? Milroe will be worth the chance at some point on Day Two, but where is that sweet spot?”
