Just a week ago, the relationship between the Los Angeles Rams and quarterback Matthew Stafford appeared to be at a potential crossroads. However, a productive meeting last Friday culminated in a revised contract agreement for the next two seasons.
Prior to that meeting, Rams head coach Sean McVay had publicly expressed his desire to retain Stafford as the team’s starting quarterback, emphasizing Stafford’s status as an “incredible player.” Therefore, it’s no surprise that McVay is pleased with the outcome of last week’s discussions.
Los Angeles Rams Operating on a Year-toYear Basis with Matthew Stafford
While there is a framework of a deal in place, the specifics have yet to be shared. But during Monday’s morning press conference, McVay shared some of the details.
According to Jourdan Rodrigue of The Athletic, “Rams will adjust Stafford’s financial terms under existing extension – operating on a year-to-year basis. He expects this conversation again next year (reiterating he wants Stafford as long as Stafford wants to play). He hopes it takes even less time in 2026.”
“Stafford is still under contract with the Rams for only the next 2 seasons, Sean McVay confirms. Which means Stafford got a solid raise, but didn’t get/want extra years.” writes Greg Beacham of the Associated Press.
The concern of age-related drop-off is obviously the reason the Rams are concerned with committing to Stafford for more than the season ahead of them. The bigger question then becomes who will become the Rams’ next franchise quarterback. They obviously like their chances to make a playoff run with Stafford under center, which means they won’t have a shot at drafting high, barring a big expensive trade-up. They will then have to look for a trade or free agency.
McVay conveyed that he’s “been sleeping better these last couple of days,” reassured by Stafford’s continued presence on the team. “Couldn’t be more grateful,” McVay stated, via Rams writer Stu Jackson. “Really excited about it.”
Adding to McVay’s satisfaction, the Rams also re-signed left tackle Alaric Jackson last week. This combination of positive developments provides McVay with ample reason to feel optimistic as the team embarks on the 2025 offseason.
