Los Angeles Rams Add Defensive Back Depth With Familiar Face

There has been plenty of chatter surrounding the Los Angeles Rams and cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon, and if he would be back with the team in 2025.

After joining the organization in 2023, he became a viable piece in the secondary. However, he was not immediately retained at the conclusion of the 2023 season. He went unsigned during the entire offseason and then rejoined the Rams in September as a member of the practice squad on a one-year deal. On October 22, he was called up and then finished the rest of the season on the active roster.

With his knowledge and continuity of the defense, it made sense to bring him back on a team-friendly deal. That has now officially happened.

The financials of the one-year deal have not been released yet, but the previous two one-year deals came in at right around $1 million each, so most likely this is the figure yet again.

The Rams needed to add secondary depth before heading into the NFL Draft. The current starting depth looks something like this:

  • Darious Williams
  • Ahkello Witherspoon
  • Quentin Lake (Nickel)
  • Cobie Durant
  • Derion Kendrick (coming back from injury)

In just 13 games with the Los Angeles Rams last year, Witherspoon finished with 31 total tackles and a game-sealing interception in the end zone against the Arizona Cardinals in the second to last game of the season. He finished with a 62.6 coverage grade, per PFF.

This is a good signing for both sides, as he brings continuity to the defensive back room, but also gives the Rams plenty of flexibility in the remaining free agency period.

This also does not preclude the Los Angeles Rams from drafting a talented cornerback in the draft. While Witherspoon is a nice piece, they are still in need of a true CB1 and someone that they can build around for the future. So going corner in the first round is still a definite possibility.
