The Los Angeles Rams, following a strong 2024 season that nearly culminated in an NFC Championship appearance, are gearing up for another playoff push in 2025. Their offseason has been marked by intrigue, particularly surrounding quarterback Matthew Stafford’s contract situation.
The Rams’ brief exploration of a potential Stafford trade drew attention from NFL executives, according to The Athletic’s Mike Sando. “I would love to know how the conversation with Stafford went and whether he felt jilted or appreciated by it,” one executive commented. “They were able to give him the opportunity to see if the grass was greener without ever losing him. They could stand on that, and that is a really powerful thing for a team, especially if they felt good about their offer.”
NFL Exec. Thinks Los Angeles Rams “Secretly Have Faith” In Backup QB

Another executive suggested that the Rams might have harbored confidence in Jimmy Garoppolo as a potential starter. “I think secretly they have faith in Jimmy Garoppolo,” the executive stated. “You don’t mess around with your starting quarterback unless you are confident in the other guy.”
While NFL teams rarely make hasty decisions regarding franchise quarterbacks, the Rams’ exploration of Stafford’s trade potential hinted at a possible strategic pivot. However, Stafford ultimately remained in Los Angeles, signing a new contract.
Stafford’s contentment with staying in Los Angeles was further solidified by the Rams’ acquisition of Davante Adams in free agency. Stafford expressed admiration for Adams, acknowledging his status as one of the NFL’s premier wide receivers. “I have a ton of respect for him, the way he goes about his business and the way he plays the game,” Stafford said. “He’s been a big-time in this league for a long time, so happy to have him. I know he’s going to be a big addition to our team.”
Adams’ arrival effectively fills the void left by Cooper Kupp’s departure, creating a formidable receiving duo alongside Puka Nacua.
