Los Angeles Rams Mishandled WR Decisions This Offseason, Per NFL Expert

The Los Angeles Rams have strategically solidified their roster with key acquisitions and the retention of vital players, setting a strong foundation for the upcoming season. Notable additions include quarterback Matthew Stafford, wide receiver Davante Adams, quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, offensive tackle Alaric Jackson, and defensive tackle Poona Ford.

The Rams’ offseason moves have been met with widespread approval. Extending Alaric Jackson’s contract before the tackle market escalated proved to be a financially astute decision, saving the team considerable resources.

The upgrade at nose tackle, replacing Bobby Brown III with Poona Ford, is expected to enhance the development of second-year players Braden Fiske and Jared Verse.

The acquisition of Davante Adams, whose performance is aging more gracefully than Cooper Kupp’s, provides a complementary role to Puka Nacua.

Furthermore, retaining Matthew Stafford after exploring trade options reinforces the team’s commitment to its core.

But according to Ben Solak, the Rams’ one big misstep surrounds a team member who has been controversial since he was drafted 57th overall in the 2021 draft class.

“Retaining Tutu Atwell over Demarcus Robinson,” Solak writes. “I understand Atwell has a trump-card trait — speed — that Robinson doesn’t have. But if I’m filling the WR3 speedster role on an offense funneling most targets to Nacua and Adams, I’d prefer to do it in the draft or in the bargain bin of free agency. Atwell has never had more than 600 receiving yards or scored more than three touchdowns in his four pro seasons. He might create bigger plays in theory, but he averaged fewer yards per reception last season (13.4) than Robinson did (16.3). I understand the argument for Atwell’s upside, but it is my least favorite part of an otherwise impressive class.”

The Rams secured wide receiver Atwell for another season, agreeing to a one-year, $10 million contract. This decision comes as the Rams navigate changes in their receiving corps, particularly with the departure of Cooper Kupp.

Atwell, a 2021 second-round pick, demonstrated his potential in the 2024 season, achieving career highs in receptions and receiving yards. While his playing time has been somewhat inconsistent, his speed and contributions have proven valuable to the Rams’ offense.

This one-year deal provides Atwell with an opportunity to further solidify his role within the team, and gives the Rams continuity in their receiving core alongside Puka Nacua.
